The University of Rhode Island has never had a team participate in Formula SAE competitions. This annual, international competition inspires students teams to design, build, and complete with single-seat formula-style racing cars. Rhody Racing is proud to say that we will become the first ever team at URI to build and compete with a Formula SAE racecar. This only further inspires our already determined and hard-working team members to make history at our university!
Our vision is to cultivate a dynamic community of aspiring professionals driven by innovation, collaboration, and ethical leadership. We strive to empower students with the technical expertise, professional skills, and real-world experiences necessary to shape the future of engineering, computer science, business and more! Through mentorship, hands-on projects, and industry engagement, we aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry while fostering a culture of inclusivity, sustainability, and continuous growth.
Our vision is to inspire the next generation of students at URI to solve challenges, learn from mistakes, and most importantly, support each other in achieving their academic, professional, and personal goals.

With the suspension system completed, Rhody Racing is officially moving onto the powertrain. This phase is essential for competition performance and requires a wide range of specialized parts and materials. As we begin this phase, funds will help support the purchase of critical items such as:
- High‑strength bolts and fasteners
- Sensors used to monitor and regulate engine performance
- Tungsten for welding and fabrication
- Additional materials needed for assembly and testing
Every contribution helps cover these foundational components and keeps the team on track as we continue building toward a race‑ready vehicle.
We are deeply thankful for the support we have received so far and are excited to enter this next phase of the build!
67 days ago by Mat DeLaireMeet Mike Amighi, Vice President and chassis team lead for Rhody Racing. Mike is a member of the Class of 2027 majoring in Mechanical Engineering and a member of the URI Honors Program. Thank you to the URI Honors Program for this video!
93 days ago by Mat DeLaireThanks to the generosity of 13 donors, the team successfully completed raising the funds necessary for our construction of the chassis! We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make that first phase possible and move this project forward.
With the chassis underway, the team is now advancing to Phase Two of our build: the suspension system — a critical step that allows the car to perform safely and effectively on the track.
We’ve increased our goal by $15,000 for this phase, and more than $700 has already been raised as we return to campus for spring semester. This stage includes many essential components, and gifts of any size help offset costs such as:
-
$100 for the steering column
-
$184 for control arms
-
$230 for universal joints
-
$250 for the pedal box
$715 for each shock
-
$900 for rims
-
$1,800 each for front and rear wheel hub and bearing kits
Every contribution helps bring the suspension together and moves us one step closer to a fully assembled, competition-ready car.
Thank You! Phase Two Complete as of March 30, 2026. Powertrain Up Next for April.
Thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters, the team has successfully completed our suspension system. This milestone represents countless hours of design, fabrication, and teamwork from our students.
We are incredibly grateful to every donor who helped make this phase possible! Your support allows our team to keep building, learning, and moving forward towards competing.
With the suspension complete, the team is now shifting its focus to the next major step of the build.
